Rebecca Strand's father is dying from pancreatic cancer. During his last days in the hospital, he tells his daughter about the half-sister she never knew existed. (He'd had an affair 26 years ago while on vacation with his family.) After her father's death, Rebecca decides she needs to meet this half-sister in Wiscasset, Maine. Joy Jayhawk, the half-sister, does not immediately accept Rebecca. She needs time to adjust to the news about her half-sister and her father. She also needs to learn to deal with the fact that her father had never tried to contact her before he died. Rebecca decides to stay in Wiscasset for an extended period in order to give Joy time to accept her. She wants a true sister relationship with Joy. Joy organizes trips, and helps people work on their relationships. She invites Rebecca to join her on a few trips, and they begin to work on their relationship. Meanwhile, Rebecca has abandoned her job as a paralegal and her relationship with her boyfriend Michael in New York City. Other characters with relationship issues get woven into the story. Rebecca learns to love Wiscasset and has to decide what to do about her future.
