“Typical Shreve story featuring marital infidelity and forbidden love. Not my most favorite story, but still beautifully written.”

i'm frustrated with how charles and sian's love story ended in a very tragic way...
but their love for each other, though unforgivable in the context of marriage, is love at its purest---love buried and rediscovered after 31 years...
i ache for the hurt their rekindled love caused their respective families, but what hurts most is the way their love ruined each other---their love made them live and die at the same time...
i can't imagine how sian will cope after losing charles...i don't want to think that she'll blame herself, but one way or the other, i know she will...=(”
“This was maybe my least favorite Anita Shreve book. I wanted to like the characters but at times they are hard to like. As always though, it held my attention. ”

Thank God it was short. That is the only reason I stuck with it and finished it, constantly hoping it would get better. Charles was creepy from beginning to end; too needy and a bit of a stalker type. No chemistry was built between the two main characters. I bought this book at a used book sale and I'm immediately donating it back. Not a keeper.”
