Liked It“Awesome book about the German / Russian WWII battle of Stalingrad. It focused on the duel between Russian sniper Vasily Zaitsev and German SS Colonel Heinz Thorvald. Based on a true story, and well researched by the author. It was a fast read, one of those books that will keep you up until 4am.” see full review » see other reviews » |
“Not bad, not great. Rather visceral descriptions of Stalingrad.”

Yes | No“with nary a dull moment mr. robbins draws the reader into the heart of bombed out stalingrad back in 1942, a time when good ol'america was still only thinking about the war destroying the heart of europe. there, in the blood and rubble of a showplace although bombed out russian town (named after stalin himself) a russian country boy learns that he's got a surprisingly marketable skill in wartime, the knowledge of how to hunt well. and as his superiors discover this so do his enemies, and his resultant popularity/infamy leads to a tense confrontation of instinct versus intelligence as the nazis send in their pre-eminent sniper to match wits with the newbie russian hero. mr. robbins makes one feel the cold of russia, the icy particular cold of war itself, the horror of close battle, and ultimately the disaffection of ideals.
if you've an interest in history and the important part war plays in that, then you will be well served with this offering.”
“ David L. Robbins live in virgia. He is one of the foremost writers of Russian History. He has several books out about the Soviet era during WW II. War of the Rats is one of these tales. This book starts out as Russian soldiers are being shipped across the Volga River to the city of Stalingrad. They are being sent there to fight the Nazi invaders. The story starts out with a man named Vasily Zaitsez. He is a new commbatant and is quickly throughn into fighting for his life. After killing a couple officers at machine gun post he is reassigned to sniper division. He quickly becomes a national hero for the Red army. Tania Chernova becomes part of the sniper patrol not long after. She also becomes a big part of Zaitsev's life during the war. Then from germany comes Colonel Heins Thornvald, the ultimate german sniper. HE is sent all the way from his blush german home to the ruined city to hunt down Zaitsev and kill him. And so it begins. The story is filled with amazing imagery and pictures of the city. The two worriors crawl through the rumble and hunting one another and tracking new places to spot the other from. This book kept my interest the whole way threw. Anybody who has interests in World War 2, snipers, or miliary in general would enjoy this novel. ”
