Scary, Humorous, and an awesome book. But some kids may be afraid of the slightly scary parts. It all depends on how much you have been exposed to...gore.; hiowever, the story line is GREAT!!

My 9 year old read this and loved it. She insisted I needed to read it so we could talk about it. It was a fun read and I enjoyed being able to share it with her.

A Tale Dark and Grimm follows Hansel and Gretel as they wander in and out of familiar Grimm Fairy Tales. The Narrator jumps in quite a bit which makes some of the "scary" parts not so scary. It is humorous and keeps some of the gruesome aspects of Grimm. Lots of action/adventure.

    A tale dark and Grimm

A prince marries a princess and become king and queen and then they have kids named Hansel and Gretel and then there is this servant that got turned into stone and the only way to turn him back into a living person is cut the heads off their children and smear the blood all over the stone. And then the king did so and the statue turned back into the living person and then the kids turned into living kids again. And then Hansel and Gretel ran away from home and tried to find new good parents that would not cut their heads off. In their adventures Hansel gets shot in the heart by a bow and arrow and then again he returns to life and then Hansel gets taken care of by these really rich people at a castle and then Hansel is gambled away to the devil and then Hansel is told that he has to be at the gates of hell and on his way he was walking (he was walking with someone else) and the other guy said the only way to get out of hell is to pull three of the devils hairs out of his head and when he arrives at the gates of hell he goes inside and is forced to jump into a pit of fiery lava and then he goes to the devils house and then he locks the devils grandma in the attic and then he dresses up as the devils grandma and then he pulls out three of the devils hairs and then runs to the doors of hell and they are open and so he then escapes and he is walking along a road and he sees this tavern and then he notices that a girl is running toward him and he finds out that it is Gretel and so they go back to the tavern and then this man burst through the doors and says that a dragon is attacking a kingdom nearby and then Hansel and Gretel come up with a plan to kill it and then there plan goes terribly wrong but then Gretel notices that their father is the dragon and so then Gretel cuts off his head and this little dragon like creature crawls out of their fathers body and then Gretel chops up the creature and throws the remains of the creature into the fire.

The author has cleverly interwoven several Grimm tales to create a new story - very dark and grim, indeed, even for a German like me who grew up with the original tales. I had to put it down a few times, when there was just a bit too much blood for my liking.

Hansel and Gretel walk out of their own story and into eight other classic Grimm-inspired tales. It is quite gross and scary but is a GREAT book!!

I think that Hansel learned the biggest lesson. When Hansel and Gretel went into the woods, the talking tree gave them very strict instructions to only take want you needed and nothing more. When Hansel was out in the woods he could help himself and killed a little rabbit. Gretel got very mad and made sure he would never do it again as long as they lived there. Surely enough, the next day he killed another animal and just kept killing other animals after that. When the talking tree told them her rule she mentioned that if they broke that rule something bad would happen. Hansel turned in to a werewolf and got shot by some hunters. I think he learned a big lesson to always follow the rules.

I think that the most significant part in the story was when the prince went in to the room with the golden princess. I think this because if he had never gone in that room he would have never met the golden princess. If they wouldn’t have met, Hansel and Gretel would not have been born. If the children weren’t born the whole story wouldn’t have happened.

In the selection I just read I really like how the author made me feel. I like it because of the way he carefully plan the story. The suspense in the story made you want to keep reading. Also I liked it because you always just kept reading because you wanted to know if the character was going to be ok. Another thing I liked is the way he separated the chapters out so carefully so that each chapter is a part of a different tale. It definitely is a wonder, suspenseful and scary story.

I wasn't entirely convinced with this book. I didn't enjoy the narrator butting in all the time and repeating the same things over and over again. Despite that some of the stories were interesting, the one about the soul eating magician particularly, and over all I did enjoy reading it. This book is worth a read.
