I wasn't too sure that I would enjoy this book but due to it being set on Cape Cod I thought I would give it a try. Couldn't put it down. Historical detail fascinating, wonderful character development and nicely paced. Left me wanting more from Ms. Gunning.

2+ stars. I read this hoping for a good historical fiction, however, other than references to some political going-ons of the day, the point of view of the main character had little to do with the 1700s. A pet peeve of mine is when "historical fiction" is infused with 21st century thoughts and...

A well-written story about a forward thinking 18th century woman. Determined to be independent, Lyddie suffers at ridicule from family, friends and neighbors. She never loses sight of what is really important to her.

A pet peeve of mine is when "historical fiction" is infused with 21st century thoughts and ideas which usually take the characters down a road of "sexual liberation".

Set in a colonial America along the coast, this is a book about a woman recently widowed who is then forced, by law, upon her in laws and her awful son in law. Lyddie is a very likeable character, full of spit and vinegar. However, I feel she was just a little too modern in her sensibilities to be believable. The sense of place and time was very well done and I felt the requisite righteous indignation about how Lyddie was treated by her family and her town.

Vivid picture of 18th century women's rights - or lack of. Lyddie defies convention after her husband dies at sea and lives her life according to her own morals. Rich characterization.
