“This book is a collection of stories on how people died or almost died by making bad decisions. There is also some interesting science writing included in the book.
I learned about "Quorum Sensing", where bacteria detect if there are enough other bacteria around before they mount an attack.
I am not a big fan of Schadenfreude ("enjoying the misfortunes of others"), but you can learn something from the mistakes of others.
You can see a lot of these stories at: www.darwinawards.com/darwin/”
Many years ago I used to read "The Darwin Awards" website and laugh at the poor decisions made. I couldn't believe some of them. However, realizing it was real, I stopped reading it as I don't like to enjoy peoples misfortune either. We all make stupid choices once in a while, and can only hope to never make one big enough to make it to that list. But you are right, it's possible to learn from other people's mistake.
