Bernadina, a selfish rich 50 some year old has died and no one truly mourns her passing at least not for loving reasons in fact she has been so selfish that most are happy that she is gone.
She wakes up to find her self in the "Kitchen" a sort of purgatory on earth yet in a spritual realm. Pauline a woman apparently working in the "Kitchen" leads Berni thriugh the in and outs and rules of the "Kitchen" showing her what she can do and all her choices. She tells Berni after showing her the time periods in which she can influence and people who need "help" and shows her a family in Chandler,CO. toward the late 1800's and Berni hones in on a woman like her who has a sister the exact polar opposite of her one whom she doesnt feels deserves her help. But Pauline firmly states that it will be the "fat" sister that Berni helps. And so reluctantly Berni grants the young (not so much in her day and age)woman 3 wishes. However she fails to tell the woman she has 3 wishes to make and so the wishes are thrown out with out knowledge of the situation and wasted and now. Berni must go to the girl and try to help her with out interferring with the made wishes effects and find a way to give this girl what she truly needs (a BIG shot of self esteem) and freedom from the oppression of those she loves and have used her love for them against her. Berni must also be able to find wisdom enough to use the power she weilds so as not to cause any more pain that has already been caused.
Now on earth Berni has full confidence that everything will turn out alright but there seems to still be trouble in paradise. So she must fulfill more than the desires of her original cause just to effect the girl she is assigned. She poofs love into everyones lives or at least all that are related to the loving couple.

  • Bernadina Berni: A woman from the present who has died and was very selfish and hateful in life and has been given a chance to redeem herself from hell. She is given the task of helping someone that in her life time she loathed and despised, and she is forced to find compassion in her heart,
  • Nellie Grayson: the older daughter of Charles Grayson, and older sister to Terel a selfish girl who has been allowed to use Nellie all her life. love interest of Jace Montgomery. She gets 3 wishes but is not informed of this and makes the wishes not even realising that they are coming true because she herself has wished them. then a mysterious Aunt Berni comes into the picture and champions her.
  • Terel Grayson: younger sister of Nellie, and youngest daughter of Charles Grayson. a selfish and manipulative and actually lucidly conniving little brat who is trying to keep her sister at her beck and call and is truly jealous and unhappy with any happiness of her loving and adoring older sister. disliked by the Taggerts and many of the people of the town who have seen her selfish and coniving ways.
  • Charles Grayson: rich but miserly man who is using his oldest daughter to keep from having to pay the proper help with his household and putting the pressure of a whole houseful of servants on this one daughter.
  • Ana: one of the few servants in the Grayson household.
  • Jocelyn "Jace" Montgomery: a cousin by marraige to the Taggerts, (Kane and Houston) who is visiting Charles Grayson to meet his "beautiful" daughter whom he soon realizes was not the one that Mr. Grayson intended for him to meet. But likes his encounter better than the one Mr. Grayson intended. In fact he despises the one he realizes Mr. Grayson DID intend for him to meet. and she - Terel interferes with him at every turn that she can. Jace has to be sneeky to get in to see the lovely Nellie. the only woman who has moved him on any level since his beloved wife died.
  • Miss Emily: a lovely older woman in the town who sees and appreciates Nellie for what she is inside and appreciates her beauty as well. Miss Emily tries to help when Terel ends up gettin her hooks into the towns people and succeeds in ruining Miss Nellies reputation.
  • Kane and Houston Taggert: cousins to Jace by marraige, and good friends as well. Houston tries and succeeds in helping Nellie get to the Harvest Ball that she and Kane are throwing despite Terels success in ruining the dress that Nellie went out and purchased.
