  • Bernadina Berni: A woman from the present who has died and was very selfish and hateful in life and has been given a chance to redeem herself from hell. She is given the task of helping someone that in her life time she loathed and despised, and she is forced to find compassion in her heart,
  • Nellie Grayson: the older daughter of Charles Grayson, and older sister to Terel a selfish girl who has been allowed to use Nellie all her life. love interest of Jace Montgomery. She gets 3 wishes but is not informed of this and makes the wishes not even realising that they are coming true because she herself has wished them. then a mysterious Aunt Berni comes into the picture and champions her.
  • Terel Grayson: younger sister of Nellie, and youngest daughter of Charles Grayson. a selfish and manipulative and actually lucidly conniving little brat who is trying to keep her sister at her beck and call and is truly jealous and unhappy with any happiness of her loving and adoring older sister. disliked by the Taggerts and many of the people of the town who have seen her selfish and coniving ways.
  • Charles Grayson: rich but miserly man who is using his oldest daughter to keep from having to pay the proper help with his household and putting the pressure of a whole houseful of servants on this one daughter.
  • Ana: one of the few servants in the Grayson household.
  • Jocelyn "Jace" Montgomery: a cousin by marraige to the Taggerts, (Kane and Houston) who is visiting Charles Grayson to meet his "beautiful" daughter whom he soon realizes was not the one that Mr. Grayson intended for him to meet. But likes his encounter better than the one Mr. Grayson intended. In fact he despises the one he realizes Mr. Grayson DID intend for him to meet. and she - Terel interferes with him at every turn that she can. Jace has to be sneeky to get in to see the lovely Nellie. the only woman who has moved him on any level since his beloved wife died.
  • Miss Emily: a lovely older woman in the town who sees and appreciates Nellie for what she is inside and appreciates her beauty as well. Miss Emily tries to help when Terel ends up gettin her hooks into the towns people and succeeds in ruining Miss Nellies reputation.
  • Kane and Houston Taggert: cousins to Jace by marraige, and good friends as well. Houston tries and succeeds in helping Nellie get to the Harvest Ball that she and Kane are throwing despite Terels success in ruining the dress that Nellie went out and purchased.

First Sentence

Later, it was said that Berni was the best dressed corpse any of her set had seen in decades.
