Axia Maidenhall has been kept in a tower her whole life or at least as far as she can remember. She has not been able to get close to anyone as her father gets rid of people she gets attached to and in the end leaves her hungry for affection and love, companionship, she does however find this is her longtime friend Tode and her cousin (eventually) Frances. Axia wants to be loved for herself not for her money.

She has a plan to accomplish goal at least on a temporary level. As she is to be escorted to her betrothed she has planned to switch places with Frances even though Frances thinks shes crazy she also sees this as her opportunity to get the much sought attention that she thinks Axia is getting. Then she meets her escort and finds out through her own acting abilities that he is interested and in need of funds that marrying her will provide. So she helps him along and he is duped nearly the entire time.

Well things get off to a bad start and what she and Frances take for granted as friendly rivalry Jaime takes as a life threat to Frances whom he thinks is the Heiress. But before their journey ends they fall in love and are married because he finds out that the young woman in his tent was actually Axia and she had slept with him. Axia thinking that mild mannered Jaime was not the fighting type and that her father was ruthless and cruel. she walks away from him thinking her father has annuled to undone their marraige. but Jaime doesnt give up and he no longer cares that she may not get her money he wants her for herself and for love.

  • Ronald Oliver: Henry's older brother, who insisted that Henry forget about Berengaria and marry the Maidenhall Heiress after all he held her captive. And had Jamie nearly beaten and starved to death.
  • Axia: the Lancaster heiress, Is originally betrothed to Gregory whose father is a rich merchant but not as rich of course as Axia's father. She trades places with cousin Frances to experience life without her title and money influencing every one she meets. Falls in love with Jaime and marries him. and also seems to bring Jaimes mom out of her fog of delirium from time to time.
  • Perkin Maidenhall: Axia's father, and a rich merchant who has a contract with Gregory Bolingbrookes father for Greg to marry Axia. Is seemingly a greedy and power hungry jerk.
  • Gregory Bolingbrooke: Orginally was betrothed to Axia via contract between her father and the young mans father. And ends up married happily to Frances who has Todes child but Bolingbrooke doesnt seem to mind.
  • Frances: cousin and companion to the real "Maidenhall" heiress and is helped, loved, and impregnated by Tode during their incarceration by Henry Oliver. Marries the original betrothed of her cousin Axia.
