This novel takes place on the planet New Terra in the year 2210. There are several flashbacks throughout the story that are necessary to the telling of the present story.

The main characters in this story: Laylah Le Croix, Henry Le Croix, Donil Silentnight, Stefan McJeysen, and Zina McFin, all have an intertwining history filled with obsessive love, hatred, family feuds and more.

On the planet New Terra are two groups: humans and Weres. Weres are those people who are able to shapeshift into a type of animal including, but not limited to wolves, felines of all types, birds, lizards and others. Weres have their own societal rules and are strongly ruled by their passionate natures. They have a delicate relationship with the humans who share the planet with them.

Three Were families, the McFin, the Le Croix, and the Silentnight families have a long history filled with feuds, romance, betrayals and death. For seventeen years has the battle between the three families continued and now major changes are happening that will once and for all set the course the families and the way the New Florida Weres live.

Characters edit see section history

  • Laylah Le Croix: Laylah Le Croix is a 17 year-old girl who has everything - money, fancy house, and servants - but who has nothing. She has been isolated by her domineering father, Henry Le Croix and has hardly any social interaction with teenagers her own age. Though she is treated well by her primary caretakers (jailers, as Laylah thinks of them) Jacques and Naiya, Laylah realizes that she is missing out on a lot in life. She has only one friend at the Academy, a girl named Britta Newsome. The other students bully Laylah, who is rather timid and a closet book lover. It isn't until she is almost kidnapped by Weres (shapeshifters) that her life begins to change. And it all starts with a young man named Donil Silentnight.
  • Henry Le Croix: A brilliant geneticist, ruthless businessman and Werewolf Alpha, Henry is the father of Laylah Le Croix. Henry is cold, distant and domineering toward his only child and never listens to what she says, feels or wants. He is content to let his employees take care of Laylah and the only time he seems interested in visiting is when he wants to punish Laylah for some perceived wrong she has committed. Henry is ruthless with his enemies and his hatred for the Silentnight clan and his obsessed stalker, Zina McFin, will create a sequence of events that could destroy his only child and the business empire he's created.
  • Donil Silentnight: 22-year-old Donil Silentnight is a Werepanther Alpha. Though he is one of the youngest, Donil is incredibly strong. He has a history with the Le Croix family but even he is surprised by the depth of his feelings for Laylah Le Croix. He knows that her father, Henry Le Croix, would never approve of the relationship but Donil is one Alpha who isn't afraid to get what he wants.
  • Zina McFin: Zina McFin is obsessed with Henry Le Croix and has spent her life trying to get him to return her affections. She has gone to great lengths and after seventeen years and various attempts, may be nearing that goal. She is the female Werewolf Alpha of her clan and she will have it all. And if she can't have what she wants, then no one gets to be happy.

Themes & Symbolism edit see section history

  • Dysfunctional Family: This theme permeates and influences many of the various characters' actions in the book. And it's not just one family that is dysfunctional in the novel. The major families involved, Le Croix, Silentnight, and McFin, all have intertwining histories, feuds and ties.
  • Loneliness: This theme is an integral thread that runs through the plot. It is the fear of being alone and/or being isolated that motivates many of the characters to extreme behaviors, both good and bad.
  • Relationships (Family, Romantic & Social): The relationships in this novel (Family, Romantic & Social), are forces to be feared, manipulated, cherished, or destroyed. They are complex and binding. They move the characters and drive them apart and together as well as encouraging them to either open their eyes and recognize what is really going on or to close their eyes and live with a memory.
