I got cotton-picking tired of picking cotton. Not one I would ever want to read twice.

This book was different for both Grisham and myself. As a long time fan, I picked thid book based soley on Grisham being the author and was delighted to see that he was able to write about other areas. but I was disappointed that it wasn't a real page turner. I found myself waiting for the book to actually start. I have to say I enjoy the suspense and drama of his other work.

I totally agree with you.I t is a change from the normal John Grisham, and i think my best. The storyline is simple, yet very well told.
You actually are transported there and find out what goes on in the mind of a 7 year old.
It frankly had me thinking John Grisham is better at non-law stories.

Like you, I felt this was a peek into my mom and dad's childhood in rural Oklahoma. They have both passed on so I couldn't get their take on it. But I could imagine my mom hating it because it was too realistic of the time. Too many hard memories. Far and away, this is my favorite Grisham book. Its the only one I haven't loaned (with request to pass it forward) to others.

This is not the typical John Grisham. Try another! This is really full circle from the usual action, wondering what comes next, figure it out plot with the twists and turns to keep your mind busy. To fully appreciate this one, you have to be from"down here", where it is a remembrance of your youth, or looking for something that you've been told existed, but never could quite lay your hands on. It's like tasting your grandma's roast that you never could get quite right. Sit back and savor...

Most of John Grisham's novels, with their legal twists and turns, tend to rush to their conclusion leaving you breathless. A Painted House is more like a quiet Sunday dinner on the farm... slow, measured pacing that leaves you well satisfied when it's over. Given its story of a the harvest season on a small Arkansas cotton farm, that analogy is particularly apt.
