This has been an enjoyable, kind of matter of fact read. My MIL left me the book after her and my FILs visit. I wasn't expecting to enjoy it, so it's a nice surprise. Makes me want to check out the rest of the alphabet series.

Great story...Kinsey meets Reba Lafferty, a paroled felon who has spent the last 22 months in jail. Reba's father Nord Lafferty wants Kinsey to help keep his daughter away from the booze, gambling and drugs. In less than 24 hours, Beck, Reba's former boss & lover, comes sniffing around. In another interesting facet of the story, Kinsey renews her acquaintance with a friend in the Santa Teresa Poilice Dept...Cheney Phillips.

Kinsey is given charge of Reba Lafferty who has just gotten out of jail on an embezzlement charge. With a gambling and alcohol addiction, keeping her out of trouble is no easy feat and they soon find themselves involved in a serious money laundering scheme.

Terrific Sue Grafton mystery -- Kinsey is at her best as she tries to take care of an ex-prisoner, spend time with her new boyfriend, and keep involvement with her landlord and his family. Great read.

I have been a big fan of the Alphabet books, but I was disappointed in this one. I didn't mind the romance aspects as much as the fact that Kinsey Milhone, our intrepid heroine, allowed herself to be continuously used a manipulated by her client, Reba. And speaking of her client, I found her to be such an annoying presence in the book that I found this tale very slow going.

The story in a nutshell is Kinsey Milhone is hired by a wealthy man to 'baby-sit' his wayward daughter who is being released from jail for embezzling funds from her former boss. Kinsey picks up Reba, the 'client', from the correctional facility and tries to help her get readjusted to civilian life. Reba has other plans, none of them very smart or legal. Consequently Kinsey is caught up in some very elaborate money laundering schemes. She also finds herself romantically involved with a cop working the case. There was also an extremely irritating sub story involving Henry, Kinsey's landlord, and his equally annoying brothers. I could have done without that whole subplot. I really enjoyed Q is for Quarry, after being disappointed in P is for Peril, but here I am disappointed again. Let’s see what "S" brings, or I may have to give up on this series.

I keep expecting to find these book less interesting as the series goes on, instead when I finish one I am more interested in what is going to happen in the next one. The only down side to this one was that, to me, it felt like Millhone was more along for the ride than being the driving force. A solid 4 stars.
