    Novel: The Broker

    Verdict: Average

Review: My first novel from John Grisham and I must say, I am dissappointed. Not sure if this is how he writes all his novel, seems I have to be courageous enough to read another one before I make a final decision about Mr Grisham. Being a Robin Cook Fan, I am used to knowing the details about the plot and how it gets resolved. 'The Broker' completely lacked such details. It did have some, but they were more about Italy and Italian lifestyle, not the case under consideration. Whatever minimal details mentioned in the novel were also fictitious, far from any truth. Not complaining much, since its suppose to be a work of fiction, but some facts add not only to the credibility but also interest to the storyline.
The concept is bizzare and the way it is handled is not interesting. The broker has been deported to a particular city for some reasons. The readers should know what are those reasons and why is he not deported to a more familiar place. There are many similar incidents mentioned in the novel which lacked reasoning. In the middle of the novel it was more of a drag, as if these details are written to increase the size of the novel. Not impressive at all. His instructor is changed in between, the first one was just a waste of time as he did not play any part in the plot but alot of time was wasted writing about him, his background and interests. Similarly, some details about the cities could have been avoided. More details about the 3 Pakistani scientists and the system they hacked would have been appreciated. Why will other countries be more interested, details on such an aspect would have been interesting. But all such details were missing, it looked more like a documentary or a reading a book from 'History Channel' about Italy .

The author also tries to touch on family bonding but failed miserably. The relation between Father and Son was totally unemotional, which could be the case based on the context of the novel but it was again handled loosely. The impact of this emotionless relation could have been highlighted by giving more genuine reasons of such a relation. Similarly more emphasis on why he comes back to help his dad could havee been handled with more care.

The Novel is suppose to be Legal Thriller but it didnt have any of the two, The Legal complexities and the thrill.
It had an open end as if a sequel is in pipeline, and if that happens I am not going to read it for sure.

The fast paced book. Felt like virtually running along with Joel Backman, the broker. But the ending is not that much understandable. A sudden and unexpected ending...
