“A very enjoyable fantasy novel set in the time- and placeless Well-Built City and its environs. It deals with the addiction, crime, punishment, guilt and redemption of Cley, a physiognomist (a reader of people's physical features to determine their character and behaviour) in the employ of Drachton Below, ruler of the Well-Built City. The writing style has a certain 'Mervyn Peake'-ness to it.”
