a little brown mouse is happy the rains have stopped and goes out to look for food, when reaching for a small piece of bread floating on the water at the curb he falls into the water and is washed down the sewer drain, once he finds the tunnel leading out of the sewer he thinks he's safe but falls into bigger water, he encounters fish and a turtle, he swims and swims to reach get back to the top and fresh air. He is very tired and needs a boat to rest upon and after looking around he finds a matchbox floating along and he climbs into and an promptly falls asleep. He wakes to find a cat staring at him, but thankfully a little girl comes along and the cat walks away and she sees the mouse in the box and takes him inside to her birdcage telling the mouse her bird flew away so he's welcomed to stay there. Winter sets in and the mouse spends the long day hours talking to the cat, until finally spring comes and the cat goes back outside. He looks out longinly, and the girl gives him cheese and tries to make him happy but finally realizes he won't be happy until he is free as a mouse should be, so she takes him outside and set him free, he dashes out to the trees looking back once to say thanks, the story ends with a lesson for children if they see a mouse not to catch him because for a mouse to be happy, as the rest of us, they need to be free.
