Gaia is Lovelock's term for the super-being that is our world, since he considers it as an organism composed of billions of other organisms and chemicals. Rather than get hung up in this concept, it is helpful to consider it that way, even if you only see it as a metaphor. When you think of the earth this way, it makes sense to consider the impact that an 'infection' like civilization might cause for such an organism.
