I was enticed to read this book after it was referenced in a chapter of "To Say Nothing of the Dog." It's a charming piece of Victoriana.

The three friends start off on a boating trip for pleasure, and it is hilarious from the beginning. Packing, setting off, towing, locks, cooking, and anecdotes galore.

As vergonhas que passei no barco que faz a travessia Barreiro-Lisboa. Motivo. Não conseguia esconder as gargalhadas que esta história de fim de século me provocavam. A boa disposição, principalmente com as situações reais são as minhas preferidas. Não há nada melhor que rir-mo-nos de nós mesmos e do que nos acontece...

One of the most enjoyable books that I read during my university years… and I have returned to it several times since. As a university kid, I wondered if I was really very different from young people who lived 100 years earlier. Well, Jerome K. Jerome would have been an incredibly fun friend... it shows in this book certainly.

On this trip down the river Thames, even for one who knows the area, you would never guess the book was published more than a century ago. "Three Men in a Boat" is as witty today as when it first arrived on the shelves. Our three men: George, Harris and the narrator, Jerome and his fox terrier, named Montmorency, decide to take a cruise down the Thames to get away from "the stress" of their daily lives. But for these three aristocrats the trip is anything but idyllic. This is one of those books that will have you howling with laughter. This is one of those books that will have you howling with laughter of their exploits: From getting lost in hedge mazes, encountering monstrous cats and vicious swans, and all the problems of navigating a small boat with no experience, even cooking with a camp fire is more complicated than they expected.

I don't understand why Jerome is unknown in my country since in my humble opinnion, he is the finest humorous British authors I have ever read. By chance, I found this 'audio' copy in my local library with Hugh Laurie as narrator with his sultry voice and wonderful tilt. I was in stitches because this book is a laugh from start to finish. The jokes, the hilarious anecdotes, this peculiar dry humour provoked me peals of laughter that split my side. The story deals with three hypochondriac Englishmen, let alone Montmorency, a wise Fox Terrier that belongs to Jerome, who decided to take a rest and go to a boat trip along the Thames in order to restore them to health and strenght. The landscape and beautiful descriptions of this trip is priceless, also how the author depicts british habits in the XIX century and bits of History. I should recommend to everyone who loves comic writting.

Before or after you read this one, read Connie Willis's To Say Nothing of the Dog.

A hilarious book about the river journey of three men and their equally eccentric dog. A very fast and enjoyable read. The author also gives historic details about the English towns they visit in this journey.
