Certain Girls: A Novel

Certain Girls

by Jennifer Weiner

Readers fell in love with Cannie Shapiro, the smart, sharp-tongued, bighearted heroine of Good in Bed who found her happy ending after her mother came out of the closet, her father fell out of her life, and her ex-boyfriend started chronicling their ex-sex life in the pages of a national magazine.
Now Cannie's back. After her debut novel -- a fictionalized (and highly sexualized) version of... (read more)

I own all four of Jennifer Weiner's prior novels and have enjoyed them all. When I started those books I could not wait to read more and find out how it ended. When I saw she had a new book, I pre-ordered through amazon.com. I have had the book for three weeks now and cannot get past page 70 because I am just finding this story boring and the characters unsatisfying. I really don't care about Cannie or Joy - both of whom are totally unlikable in this book.

This is a huge disappointment for me. I got through Jennifer's other four books in just a few days, I'll be lucky if I finish this one in a few months as I am completely uninspired to open it up and keep reading.
terrible sequel

"Good in Bed" is my favorite book...incredibly insightful, funny, interesting, etc. This sequel was a huge dissapointment. I expected so much more....In Good in Bed, I fell in love with Cannie's humor. In the sequel, all she is represented as is old, boring, and fat to her daughter. The book did not flow, the story was boring and predictable, and the ending made me angry. Terrible book! Weiner needs to go back to her roots and write in the wonderful way she did in Good In Bed.
Also, I must have been given a book that was printed before the final editing. There are COUNTLESS spelling and grammor errors filled throughout the book!

I absolutely loved Good In Bed. I loved Cannie and her ability to come into herself.
What the heck happened??? This Cannie is a smothering mother who whines, is insecure, and Joy turned into a selfish little brat. If my tweenage daughter did what she did, I certainly would not take her shopping! And the destruction of Peter..??? Why did you have to do that Jennifer.
I am so incredibly dismayed after reading this book What a let down.
I liked it until the end

I really wanted to like this book a lot, but it was just ok. Cannie, who was so much fun and sharp in the previous book has now become scared of her own shadow and is smothering her daughter. She treats Joy like she's 5 instead of teenager, Joy is sullen and grumpy but I can see why. I needed more of Elle and Cannie's relationship with other people. I have to say, what the author does with Peter was completely unnecessary and ruined the end of the book for me.
Not as good. But okay.

I was so excited about this book coming out! I loved "Good in Bed" and most of Jennifer Weiner's other books especially "In Her Shoes." Unfortunately though the back and forth narration between Cannie and Joy got a bit annoying. The whole thing with Peter felt like a COMPLETE stunt move to me and did not make any sense with the rest of the book. It was kind of like Jennifer Weiner thought enough bad things hadn't already happened to Cannie so she threw that in at the end.

Overall though, I'd give the book a B or B+ because even though there was a lot of points I didn't agree with (treatment of Peter, switching of the narration) the writing was still very engaging.
