The look at Lynley's schoolboy roots and his motivation for some actions (and in counterpoint, those of his partner) make for some good background on the characters. The subplot of the personal issues between some of the other characters (the extended Lynley family as I call them) got tedious. Really tedious at times. ”

Very un-English to me and I really cared so VERY little about the Deborah and Simon storyline. It also seemed to take a very long time to get someplace. I'm not sure how many more I'll slog through.”

This is my first taste of Elizabeth George's books and I'm highly impressed. She weaves her stories well and throws in a lot of twists and turns to keep you guessing. Just when you think you have it figured out, she throws a wrench in. For anyone who enjoys a good mystery, grab this one. You won't be disappointed.”

The mystery is clever and chilling and sufficiently twisty. The portrait of boarding school life is really interesting. Also, it creates a great venue for exploring Lynley's and Havers' different values and expectations that arise from their differing backgrounds. They each contribute something valuable to the investigation, so I think this book is one of the best for showing the wisdom of putting these two together as partners.”
