That tens of millions of people were imprisoned, tortured, exiled and murdered in the USSR is difficult to grasp other then as abstract numbers. Orlando Figes takes these numbers and gives them faces and history in his book which covers the Soviet regime's from its inception to its collapse. There is an impressive amount of detail on how, throughout the decades, normal people lived under the government system and how they became victims of it.
