- Arthur (Art) Mumby: The main character and narrator of the story, a daring young Victorian adventurer!
- Myrtle Mumby: Art's older sister, who sometimes narrates the story. Very lady-like, and determined to maintain decorum throughout their adventures.
- Mrs. Emily Mumby: Art and Myrtle's other-worldly mother, a shaper who has taken the form of a human to bring up her children.
