This book is as unique in plot and style as all of Kerouac's other books (which is to say extremely). It is very sharp and genuine, and I can guarantee that whoever reads it will take something good from it.

Kerouac's prose is like music. You can't speak it in any conventional way, but by the end of a few seconds of hearing it, you get a transcended feel for what the artist is trying to say. Tristessa is essentially a very semi linear memory stream about a girl, a few mexican locations, a drug dealer man and some animals, which Kerouac uses as motifs to riff off of into a jazzy, philosophical, judeo-buddhist post-modern energy storm. Unreasonably gorgeous and exciting.

A poignant memoir/novel based on the days Jack spent in Mexico. His pre-doomed relationship with the lost morphine addict, Tristessa, carries the book. Readers find themselves alternately hoping for a happy ending, yet waiting for the inevitable sad one. A classic of Kerouac's beat writing.

This may be my favourite Kerouac novel. Slim and poignant. Truly remarkable. Not to be missed. Can I throw anymore cliches in here?

As with all Kerouac he writes straight from the deep recesses of his mind which strikes a chord with my own. Strange effect to me when reading - like sitting together on a high bench, swinging our legs listening to thoughts or conversation, waiting for something to happen, then when its finally over, realising it has happened. These books inspire some part of my mind that tap into my own dreams when I'm sleeping. Tristessa is trouble, not the sort of girl you'd want to be stuck with, but Jack's love for her and how she lives is certainly worth exploring.

This was my first Kerouac book, and it felt a little weird... Some passages were beautiful but others were very confusing, due to the language, structure and crazyness of the characters themselves, I guess. It may require another read so I can fully appreciate it.
