  • Edward Elric: Ed is a gifted alchemist affiliated with the military. He lost his right arm and left leg in a alchemical experiment when he was young. His brother Alphonse is nothing but a soul trapped in a suit of armor. Now, fitted with "auto-mail" prostheses, he is on a quest to find the Philosopher's Stone, mythical substance that has the power to restore his and his brother's original bodies.
  • Alphonse Elric: Alphonse is Ed's younger brother. His entire body was lost in the same experiment that cost Ed his arm and leg. Now confined to a lifeless armor body Al searches with his brother for the Philosopher's Stone.
  • Roy Mustang: A colonel in the state military, Roy is the man who originally convinced Ed to join the military. Roy is an alchemist who specializes in the creation and manipulation of fire. Ed and Roy don't always get along but they help each other out when things get rough. Roy entertains dreams of rising to become the Fuhrer President of Amestris.
  • Winry Rockbell: Winry is a childhood friend of Ed and Al and the one who built Ed's prosthetic limbs.
  • Alex Armstrong: An alchemist and major in the state military.
  • Maes Hughes: A Lt. Colonel in the state military and head of the court-martial office. Hughes is a nice guy who helps Ed and Al out.
  • Fuhrer President Bradley: The leader of Amestris.
  • Lin Yao: A prince from the foreign nation of Xing who is also seeking the Philosopher's Stone.
