Alice, the main character is introduced in the book with her partying best friend Jane, and her younger, but much smarter brother, Milo. After unsuccessfully getting into a club, they start to walk home, where they get followed by drunken men. To the rescue comes Jack, which Jane is uncontrollably in love with, and starts a relationship with Alice. Alice is then introduced into a mysterious world full of secrets that she tries to uncover in the first book of the series.

Characters edit see section history

  • Alice Bonham: Alice is the protagonist of the novel. She lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota with her mother, Anna, and her little brother (16 yrs. old) Milo. Alice attends a local high school and is in the 11th grade, though she doesn't appear to be that great of a student. Her brother is the academic. She spends a lot of her time doing nothing or worrying about her super egotistical best friend Jane when they go out together. When Alice meets Jack, a 24 year-old guy who is incredibly good looking, she never figures that he has a family secret, and not just his great looks, wealth or the fact that he seems so in to her...
  • Peter Townsend: Jack's second eldest "brother". Peter, although gorgeous, is aloof and at times extremely hostile towards everyone, especially Alice. He is constantly rebuking her attempts at friendship but we learn that there is more to his attitude then first supposed.
  • Milo Bonham: Alice's little brother. Milo is an academic and since he is only 16 years old in this novel, he really can't do much except lecture Alice about her responsibilites. He is left at home mostly and becomes a sort of tragic figure for a little while.
  • Ezra Townsend: Mae's husband and the eldest of the Townsend "brothers". Exceeding handsome, he is very well educated and business savvy. It is his home that Jack, Peter, and Mae live in. He built it just for them.
  • Mae Townsend: Ezra's wife. Mae is the 'mom' of all the Townsend men, she cares for them, cleans up after them and she has an immediate and decided affinity for Alice when they first meet; and then for Milo when he meet her as well.
  • Jane Kress: Alice's super vain best-friend. Jane is interested in four things: boys, booze, drugs, and sex. She is constantly dragging Alice into parties where she proceeds to run off to get any one or all of the things she needs. She is constantly taking little jabs at Alice as well. When Jack shows up, it irks Jane to no end that he prefers Alice over her.
  • Matilda: The Townsend family dog, a white Samoyed. Favours Jack.
  • Samuel: Mae's natural born son, who is not involved in the story. He died as an infant.
  • Philip: Mae's first husband who died. He died as a human and is the father of Mae's children.
  • Jack Townsend: A Vampire, sired by Peter and 'brother' of both him and Peter's sire Ezra. Befriends Alice.
