There were times I was a bit confused because it goes back and forth between two time periods (perhaps I was less focused than I should have been) It got easier as the book went on and I think I would like to read it again at some point. I had to concentrate to follow the connections between the 1900 story and the present parallel story (1997 -1998 ish). I loved the characters and felt the author made them known to the reader in personal ways. Lots of history of Egypt and the Arab world which lends insight into the present mess in that part of the world. Not a light book but well worth the concentration needed to read. I liked it a lot.”

Visiting his sister in Cairo, they piece together the stories from Anna’s journals and as the old tale unfolds, it invests Isabel’s tale with fresh complexities and depths. For Egypt, and cross cultural marriages, they discover that ancestry is more than just a family affair.”

Also, there is a little dictionary in the back of words and phrases. I didn't realize this until several chapters into the book. ”

A love story set during the Egyptian freedom movement not only is a good insight into the country and it's culture but is also a brilliant read.”
