Cassia Reyes, is a seventeen year old girl who has always trusted the Society to make the right choices for her: What to do, what to think, and what to believe. Even when to die. So when her best friend Xander Carrow's face appears on the screen at the Matching-Ceremony, she's certain the Society has found her ideal match, until she sees another boy's face flash onto the screen for just an instant before the screen fades to black. This boy is Ky Markham. An Aberration. Cassia is pulled aside, assured by the Society it was just a rare malfunction, a silly prank. Cassia begins to find herself wanting to know more and more about Ky, and she realizes she's slowly begun to fall in love with him. Near the end of the book, they kiss, but after that, Ky is taken away by the Officials to the Provinces. Cassia and her family are also brought to the Provinces. She promises that she will find Ky.
