Countess Bathory of Hungary is often thought of as the Bloody Countess or the Female Dracula, rumored to bathe in the blood of her female servants. In truth, she was a high-born lady who grew up around the accepted physical humiliation of the lesser classes, be they Gypsies, foot soldiers, or house servants, who went further than the norms. It is possible she was walled up in prison to allow her rich lands to be taken by others; it is also possible that the starved and beaten bodies found on her property were just too much for anyone to handle. Regardless, this book starts with the young life of this Countess, her childhood being raised to run a rich household, and her eventual loveless marriage to a wealthy landholder. As she grows in her role of lady of the house, the young girls sent to her often become the playthings of her husband, and she treats the matter with all the rage and jealousy one would expect.
