  • Dr. Nicholas Mackenzie: A professor who has a reputation of being a "God hater". He is drawn into his brother's attempt to create an Artificial Intelligence world.
  • Annie Brooks: A colleague and friends of Nicholas's. She has a 5 year old son.
  • Travis Mackenzie: Brother of Nicholas, though they are estranged. He is attempting to create an Arificial Intelligence virtual world where characters have free will.
  • Hugh: Colleague of Travis's who is a computer programming wiz.
  • Kallab: An AI personage who is a Breaker. He planned to be a member of the Council but became discouraged when he couldn't control his thoughts and make his inside as perfect as he thought it should be.
  • Rebecca: A former student of Nicholas's who is now working with Travis on the AI world project.
  • Saida: Becomes Alpha's woman after he receives communication of the Law from The Programmer which tells him it is OK to kill the rats that have been causing the disease that's wiping out the personages. She bears him 2 children. She is also the first to listen to The Virus.
  • Dortha: An AI personage with the Breakers. She's a prostitute.
  • Rusty Brooks: Annie's 5 year old son who is quite intelligent. He and Nicholas play video games together.
  • Nyrah: Alpha's and Saida's daughter--The apple of her father's eye, she breaks from the family when she realizes that she can never live up to the level of perfection he expects. She is with the Breakers as a prostitute.
  • Fran: Annie's babysitter--also a bit of a computer wiz.
  • Claire: Matthew's daughter.
  • Matthew Hostetler: An FBI agent.
  • Agapoff: The head of the Reverse Engineering part of the AI project.
  • Dixon: A wealthy man who is behind financing for the AI project.
  • Orib: Alpha's and Saida's son, he embraces the Law and becomes a most outspoken member for punishing those who don't keep the Law.
  • Alpha 11: Usually called Alpha, he is an AI personage based on Nicholas's deceased son Mikey.
