Characters/People edit see section history

  • Desember: Lead character in the book. Angie's daughter. 18. Desember was a natural born hustler. There wasn’t anything she wouldn’t sell—well, except for her body and her loyalty. It was no secret: the girl was a mobile store, and everybody knew that Desember always had something that was in demand in the trunk of her car. Desember had been voted most likely to succeed, best dressed and most likely to be arrested—plus she had filled out nicely.
  • Fame Maurauder: Desember's boyfriend. His freckles and youthful smile made him appear much younger than his actual nineteen years. Real name is Famis. Fame was now a full five inches taller than Desember with a swagger to match. robbed because he was good at it.
  • Angie: Desember's mother. Desember hated the fact that her mother was, and always had been, dependent on a man. That was one of the reasons she hustled as hard as she did; she didn’t want to end up living that way.
  • Joe Livingston: Desember abusive stepfather. Angie's husband of one year. Desember’s latest stepfather owned a very successful construction business and enjoyed getting bent with his workers on the weekend. It made him feel like one of the guys, even though he was the boss. Joe was usually a nice, kindhearted guy, but liquor would transform him into a monster and make him say horrible things to the people he loved and sometimes cause him to become violent.
  • Francine Maurauder: Fame's mother.
  • Carson: In the streets, Goatee went by the name of Carson. If talk on the street was right, he’d been in the drug game for over two decades and had never seen the inside of a jail a day in his life or even a holding pen. Rumor had it that Carson had a family connect from St. Marten.
  • Kayla: December's best friend; had been calling the infamous projects home for one month shy of a year now.
  • Frank Maurauder: One of Fame's brothers.
  • Dominique Fuller: Owned the newest, hottest and hippest strip club in Raleigh. Club was established and backed by drug money, although most thought—incorrectly—that he’d given up the drug trade years ago. He was much too greedy and his taste much too exquisite to retire from it, though.
  • Kim: Desember's favorite booster and best supplier.
  • Kristin: Desember's fake half sister. Kristin is Daryl’s daughter. 14.
  • Frazier Maurauder: One of Fame's brothers. 3 years his senior. Around 5'10.
  • Ms. Taylor: Kim's mother.
  • Lyons: Police officer looking into shooting.
  • Vanessa: Was a well-developed brown-skinned chick that sold herself throughout the projects. She had a regular clientele of white boys that came through.
  • Shelia: A nurse. Mildred's co-worker.
  • Big Ty: He migrated to Charlotte from the Big Apple (or Rotten Apple, depending on who you ask) about four or five years ago and quickly added to the already growing drug trade. He was a big guy, standing about 6′2″, over 250 pounds. He was built solid.
  • Chelle: Kristin’s younger sister. 13.
  • Daryl: Daryl was the first guy that Desember's mother said was her father. Daryl was the only father Desember knew up until she was three years old. No one in his family believed Desember belonged to him; her dark skin and cognac-colored eyes were so different from his light complexion and gray eyes.
  • Deputy Jock: Was fifty-four years old, but could still wear his military uniform from when he had joined the army at eighteen.
  • Fabian Maurauder: One of Fame's brothers. About six foot.
  • Faith Maurauder: Fame's sister.
  • Felix Maurauder: Fame's oldest brother.
  • Felix Sr. Maurauder: Patriarch of the family. On his nineteenth year of doing a 25-to-life sentence for killing a man with a baseball bat. The story was that at the age of twelve, Felix Marauder, Jr. was already a little menace, on his way to being a young terror.
  • Kaylisa: Kayla's daughter. D was both godmother and father to her.
  • Keeva: Light-skinned with green contacts, was Vanessa's only competition.
  • Magistrate Dobbson: She was 44 years young, her blond hair wrestling with gray and her figure reflecting a penchant for good cooking.
  • Midget Man: One of Desember's best customers.
  • Ned: The wino that sleeps by the train tracks
  • Nurse Mildred: A white older lady with short dark hair. She has bright, but slightly tired, blue eyes; she has compassion.
  • Pockets: Fame’s homeboy who worked at the car wash was always on the lookout for somebody to hit up.
  • Stan: Angie's ex-husband. Loved Desember as if she were his own, but the two weren’t married long when the Feds gave him twenty years for tax evasion and running a lucrative numbers operation.
