• Nancy: The first main character in the story. Nancy is left all alone by her parents and brother who have gone on vacation. Nancy wanted to stay home to prove that she could care for herself, but being alone this time was more than she expected. Nancy quickly learns to adapt to this strange and dangerous environment.
• Bernard: Bernard is a down-on-his-luck ex-convict who's worked hard to keep his life together since being release from prison. But as chance would have it, he has to break the law to keep his family afloat. At this same time, Bernard finds himself right on the front line of the outbreak.
• Doctor Quincy Foley: Dr. Foley is the coroner on duty during the outbreak. Foley quickly discovers strange happenings with the corpses and finds the man who he believes to be the source of the outbreak. He also connects the outbreak to a virus that is spread through bodily fluids.
• Max: Max is a prisoner who has paid a guard to help him escape. A hardened criminal, most people fear upon sight. Unfortunately, when his plan to escape is set in motion, the outbreak begins.
• Harold: Harold is the prison guard who is helping Max escape. Harold talks quite a bit of trash, but doesn't often back it up. Harold finds himself in a very frightening situation when the outbreak occurs and he's on his own.
• Groves: Groves is an ex-navy officer turned hitman for an unnamed government agency. While he had been successful in taking down several high profile targets, Groves had decided to retire. While on his last mission, the outbreak occurs.
• Jack Sloane: Jack is a musician who has been scarred by a major incident in his life. After the incident, Jack has become reclusive and is now hiding himself away from the world, including his son.
