Eerie, and at times trying the reader's patience, but an unusual perspective. While no one could possibly sympathize with Escobar and his choices, Marquez manages to show an Escobar that wants his human side known.

This is one of Gabo's few non-fiction stories. It involves the real-life kidnapping of prominent journalists in Colombia during the late 1980's. It shows the day to day hardships that the kidnappings cause on the victims and their families. It also lets us see the human side of some of the criminals involved in the kidnapping.

What happens when a magical realist decides to write about the reality of Columbia. One of the most powerful books about terror and criminal activities that I have ever read.

Esta novela esta basada en las experiencias de los periodistas secuestrados por gente de Pablo Escobar, durante la crisis de "los estraditables". Es tremenda novela.

Great book showing this part of Colombian history. Since I was living in Colombia I enjoyed that really much!

I found this very well written. I thought the author was so unattached, so univolved in his story. It seemed like he was just stating facts instead of writing a story. I think this style of writing is what I loved about the book.

Harrowing. I hated every single person in this book as people, and hoped it would end in a bloodbath with them all dying. Alas, it was not to be.
