One Thousand White Women is the story of May Dodd and a colorful assembly of pioneer women who, under the auspices of the U.S. government, travel to the western prairies in 1875 to intermarry among the Cheyenne Indians. The covert and controversial "Brides for Indians" program, launched by the administration of Ulysses S. Grant, is intended to help assimilate the Indians into the white man's world. Toward that end May and her friends embark upon the adventure of their lifetime. Jim Fergus has so vividly depicted the American West that it is as if these diaries are a capsule in time.

Everyone I know who read this book liked it very much. It is part romance novel and part adventure story masquerading as a diary which, of course, was written in very 19th century style, as it should have been. It was almost as though the author was trying to appeal to both men and women and failed miserably at doing either.
    A fast and easy read.

It was a good story. I agree abt his voice being as authentic as Memoirs of a Geisha.

I LOVED the book, the premise, the storytelling. We had it our women's group book group several years back and all agreed it was pretty amazing that it had been written by a man. Well done and hard to put down. Another "female voice" book that's really well done by a man is Memoirs of a Geisha.

I think the reason you have a hard time seeing May, the main character as a woman, may be that the book was written by a man... I thought the book was a good read - we discussed it in our Shelfari book club and those who read it enjoyed it.

I initially picked up this book because the premise sounded very interesting. The diary format is well written and makes it a quick read. However, it is hard to see the main character as a woman, much less one that lived a century and a half ago. If you can get past those issues it's not a bad book.

Zubin, What was so awful about this novel? I'm thinking of recommending it to a book group?

I'm so glad I read this book. I didn't think I would like it and I was definitely wrong. It offers an amazing perspective into the relationships our country had with the Native American culture and an interesting "what if this had happened instead" situation. Excellent author and story!
