Didn’t Like It“Interesting read about art and art history. Many pointless detailing, awkward and too predictable dialogue. Overall, I was disappointed by the ending because many issues were solved to easily by the death of a character.” see full review » see other reviews » |

One of the most treasured things about reading for me is when a novel has an impact on me that causes me to do something--in this case, go through my old art books, go to an art museum, browse artwork at a gallery, or attend an art show. Then by coincidence, I discovered that a cousin of mine, whom I never had the opportunity to meet growing up because of silly family feuds, is a fine artist in the DC area. I am going to her art show and looking to buy a piece of her work for my house. LOVE IT!”

No knowing what to do she turns to Maruius Remmington, an art dealer and her former employer. He takes her in hand, marries her, and teaches her all about art. But he turns out to be very jealous and controlling. Annette meets Jack, a journalist, after she has been married for 21 years. It is love at first sight for both of them.
There was much about art, artists, and forgeries in this tale. Also there were many coincidences, some rather stretching. I would not call it a very exciting or page riveting tale. ”
“Simply a wonderful writer!”

First, the book was rather long and contained so many boring unnecessary details. Second, the conversations held between the characters were somewhat uninteresting and contained descriptions about their past that it was rather incomplete. Like what happened to Annette"s, the lead character's Cousin Alison who helped them escape their past life, and how could they lose touch with her if she saved their life. ”

Playing the Game is centered around the life of Annette Remmington, a rising star in the art world, and her struggles to succeed in not only her art consultant business but in her personal life as well. Married to the controlling, manipulative Marius, Annette's life is turned upside down when she starts to fall for the young journalist, Jack Chalmers, who confesses his love for her. As the story progresses, we start to learn the truths about Annette's past and why it continues to haunt her in her present life. For me, this book was a little difficult to get into as it moved rather slowly in the beginning and seemed to drag out in places that could easily have been avoided. Once I got to the middle of the book, it started moving much more quickly and kept me intrigued for the remaining pages. There are some brief flashbacks brought to life in the book about Annette's childhood that some may find disturbing, but other than that it would be a good read for mature audiences. Overall, I give this book 4 stars as it is a nice quick read, once you get past the beginning, and the characters are well written and can easily be related too. ”
