“Although I enjoyed the Boston/Ireland setting and the romance between secondary characters Josie and Myles (far more interesting that Scoop and Sophie), I had a hard time getting into the book because there are *so many* characters to keep track of. Throughout the entire novel, I found myself struggling to remember how they all related to one another.
I think because I haven't read the previous books in the series (didn't realize this was book 4! Cover gives no indication of such) I was at a huge disadvantage when it came to following the story. Clearly much of the cast appeared in "The Mist," which I haven't read.
Then I had a really hard time with how in dialogue the characters would just bring up names out of the blue without someone asking a question, or have no problem answering questions from a complete stranger. And towards the end when the heroine allows another character to steal her phone and still goes with this person (of course to the location of the killer) that was just too much. I mean, were no warning bells going off inside this woman's head when the person took her phone?????
And I found the jumps to conclusion about who the killer was, and the entire ending, convoluted. Also, references to shape-shifters (in a non-paranormal story) felt forced.
The book DOES have suspense. You want to figure out what's going on so you keep reading, but it was not as satisfying an ending as other suspense novels I've read. There was never any "ah-ha" moment in the story where everything clicked and the stakes, even with people dying, didn't feel very high or personal enough to the main characters. ”
