Characters edit see section history

  • Cassel Sharpe: Main protagonist. Born into a family of curse workers, Cassel is witty and great at conning. He has recently found out that he can perform the rarest type of curse working: transformation. Grew up with Lyla, the daughter of a mob boss, and who he still loves to this day. Always puts on a front when in the midst of other people, even his closest friends. Cunning. Still learning how to use and control his powers.
  • Lila Zacharov: The daughter of a big worker mob boss and Cassel's love interest. Cassel had thought he murdered her, but turns out he hadn't--just transformed her into a cat. His mother works her to be in love with him without his knowledge in order to ensure that they can never be together, because Cassel will never be able to tell if Lila really loves him or if it's just the curse talking. Lila is a dream worker. Future head of the family trade. Wants revenge on Barron, Phillip, and Anton for what they tried to do to her and her father.
  • Sam Yu: Cassel's roommate at Wallingford and best friend. Very into special effects. Dating Daneca.
  • Barron Sharpe: One of Cassel's older brothers. He is a memory worker, but the blowback has stripped him of his own memories. He records things in journals so he can remember them later, some of which Cassel had forged in order to make a plan work.
  • Daneca Wasserman: Sam's girlfriend and leader of HEX, a school organization supporting worker rights. She is a worker herself. Lives in a large house with maids, and needless to say, is rich. She is very active in her protests against the governor's plans for forced testing to determine which citizens of New Jersey are workers and who aren't.
  • Philip Sharpe: One of Cassel's older brothers. Physical worker. Currently angry at Cassel over events that happened in the previous book. His wife left him with their son in tow after finding out he was using Barron to strip away the memories of their topsy turvy relationship.
  • Greg Harmsford: A rude guy at Wallingford that is very anti-worker and is dating Cassel's ex-girlfriend Audrey. Loves to start fights and is very possessive.
  • Northcutt: Headmistress of Wallington
  • Agent Hunt: A federal agent that deals with workers.
  • Agent Jones: A federal agent that deals with workers.
  • Audrey: Cassel's ex-girlfriend who hates Lyla, and knows Cassel better than anyone else. She can see behind the front he portrays.
  • Janssen: A man who disappeared a while ago. In the case file that is given to Cassel to look over.
  • Mrs. Wasserman: Daneca's mother. A worker who is proud of it and is an advocate for workers' rights. A lawyer by trade.
  • Governor Patton: Governor of New Jersey and a strong supporter of proposition-two, a bill that would require everyone in the state of New Jersey to take a test to determine if they are a worker or not. A huge threat to all workers.
  • Anton: Cousin of Lila. Tried to take over the mob family by using Cassel to 'kill' her. Convinced the diamond worn by the head was incredibly powerful in terms of protection.
  • Ms. Ramirez: Teacher who sponsers HEX. Very kind and open minded.
  • Grandad: Cassel's grandfather. Death worker. One of the originals who lives in the Carney settlement.
  • Maura: Philip's wife who has run away with their son, Aaron, after finding out that Philip was having Barron mess with her memories. She was able to find this out due to the protection stone given to her by Cassel in the first book.
  • Stanley: A worker for Zacharov--body guard
  • Chris: A kid who lives with the Wassermans. Considered a 'charity case' by Danika. Taken in by her mother who hopes to save him from the darker side of a worker's life.
