- Michael Coletti: Steven Adler's birth name. Changed shortly after when his mother moved back home. This is also the name of his birth father.
- Deanna Alder: Steven's mother
- Big Lilly: Steven's grandmother. Deanna's Jewish mother. Emigrated from Warsaw in late 1939 and arrived 3 days before Hitler's armies invaded Poland.
- Stormin' Norman: Steven's grandfather. Deanna's father.
- Tony Coletti: Steven's older brother. His name was changed to Kenny when Mike became Steven.
- Kenny Alder: Steven's brother.
- Melvin Adler: Steven's step-father. He adopted both Steven and Kenny. He is known as Mel. He had been Deanne's boyfriend in Cleveland and came out to California to be with her.
- Saul Hudson: Met when they were 11. Would later become known as Slash.
- Slash: This nickname was given to Saul Hudson by Seymour Cassel.
- Jamie Adler: Steven's younger brother. He was born to Deanna and Mel.

Before you know it, the booze and the drugs have muscled their way in to replace the natural buzz, then they make it impossible for you to enjoy any kind of joy at all, because you’re all torn down, dead inside. You have no clue how you got so out of touch with the simple pleasures. If kids could just maintain a knack for capturing the natural highs in life, then the other crap would turn them off. Drugs would just bore them shitless when compared to a genuine high.
