The Great tree of Avalon Child of the Dark Prophecy is a great book that has a strange twist. If you are somebody who likes adventure and wants a book that you won't want to put down, this is the book for you. When Merlin planted a seed that beats like a heart,it grew into the Great tree of Avalon. Everything goes great until the stars of famous constellation, The Wizards Staff, starts going out, it can only mean the end of Avalon.

    Bibliographic information
Barron, Thomas, The Great Tree of Avalon: Child of The Dark Prophecy, New York,
    Philomel Books, 2004

    Literary Analysis
The point of view used in this book is 3rd person omniscient. The book focuses on various different people and what is happening to them. The book is about a group of people and some other creatures to find out how to stop the stars in the sky from going out and finding the true heir of Merlin and finding the child of the Dark Prophecy. The primary speaker in this book is the narrator. The speaker seems to have a dark tone in this book. There are many things pertaining to dark subjects such as death, slavery, and etc. The writer uses techniques such as metaphors and descriptions to get certain feelings in his book. The theme is about human nature. Human nature such as the evil aspects of it and how they're superior to other creatures.

    Personal Review
This is a great book. This is a book you may have a hard time putting down. The story and the way it's told is pretty great. The Great Tree of Avalon is a great start to a trilogy and a great start from The Merlin series, a previous series that T.A. Barron did. This book is rich witth magic as The New Yorker said, but it is a huge adventure filled with many things and many themes. This book will blow you away with its story, detail, and events!

I enjoyed this book for the most part. It's a classic adventure/good vs. evil story. The first book starts with a prophecy from the Lady of the Lake concerning the dark times to come in the realms of the great tree of Avalon. You follow the stories of several characters as they all meet up and start their path to destroy the evil that is trying to take over Avalon. Two adopted brothers are visited by Merlin. One is given the staff of Merlin to protect, the other is gifted magically. At age ten they are separated and each spends the next seven years searching for the other. On the way, Tamwyn (the magically gifted brother) meets Elli (a priestess of the Drumadian order) and they start out hating each other, which of course means that eventually in the series they will fall in love with each other. In the meantime, and evil sorcerer is enslaving the land and making all lowly creatures do his evil work.
I have to say the story is predictable, and the world the author is trying to create is not executed very well. There is a lot of lore that he wants you to understand, but he is no Tolkien, and falls very short. The story was a bit slow to start, and I wasn't sure if I would ever finish it. By the last 1/2 of the book, I was enthralled enough to continue. It's not great YA literature, but it was a fun read, and I'll probably finish the series.

The author successfully creates a whole new world that exists within a tree. From its Root-realms to the stars above the branches, each area has its own terrain and elements. The world is believable, the characters are endearing, and the story progresses well, yet with plenty of detail. This is book one in the trilogy.
