An amazing finish to an amazing series ... The 'dismount' is excellent - a stimulating, disturbing (at times) and compelling read.

This final installment of theSandman series feels very much like what it is: an epilogue. The main plot of the series was resolved in high fashion in the previous volume, and several of the stories in The Wake feel like afterthoughts, or leftover ideas that the author felt needed to be shared nevertheless. That being said, the final tale about Shakespear's bargain with Dream must rank among the very best "side" stories in the series, and serves as a fantastic punctuation mark on the series as a whole.
This completes my goal of reading the main, 10-volume Sandman series. I may pick up a few of the odd bits and spinoffs, but for now I think I'll pick up some prose.

The Endless hold a wake for Dream and invite the dreamers and his friends to speak.

The last of the series, wraps up the plot with mastery.

It's hard to write a review of a the last book in a series without spoiling the ending. I will say that there are few pages in here that contain some of the most poignant, heartbreaking moments in anything I've read: Despair reveals her beauty and her purpose, a stranger says a few words at the funeral of a man he's never really known, and an angel sheds a silent tear. Gaiman ends his outstanding, glorious series perfectly with this book, with a shou out to Shakespeare and a reminder that life goes on, that we must wake up from our dreams just as we must return to them every night. God bless him.
