One of the oldest stories in existence, this epic is strange, and sort of interesting.

It has been a few generations since I've read Gilgamesh and only remember it being an odd hero journey where the hero encounters some interesting female characters. Stephen has compiled a literary adaptation of Gilgamesh so inviting you can swim in it. The deep end has been filled with a psychological walkthrough of the mythical hero's journey. For me, it is a powerful, living example for male spirituality from the encounter with the wild man to the chasing off death to the final surrender where the story is suddenly retold anew.

The epic of Gilgamesh is the story of King Gilgamesh of Uruk, his friendship with the wild man Enkidu, and his journey to find Noah/Utnapishtim and discover the secret of immortality. Originally written in Akkadian on clay tablets over 3000 years ago, the epic of Gilgamesh is only as good as the translation one chooses to read.
The 1999 translation by Andrew George seems to be the most literal English translation to date, and one that I can wholeheartedly recommend. Entirely in verse, it preserves the poetic format as it appeared on the tablets. Some of the tablets include overlapping text, and at some places the text is missing where the tablets appear damaged. What remains is a timeless story of friendship and courage that I will gladly read over and over again.

Fascinating peek into the literary style and minds of the ancient Sumerians.
