Helps view the parrells of our universe with so many opposites to our very natures as human beings. Very quick read but lots to think about.” see full review » see other reviews » |
“I didn't really like Gilgamesh just by reading the summary on the back and seeing the cover of it. But when I started reading it and we started explaining it in class, it started becoming interesting to read and understand as e went through it in class. I really like the messages thsi book is giving about friendship, how valuable it is and how you need to trust peopl and be modest to have a better life.

This was the first known piece of literature ever to be written. It was located around the Mesopatamean area. The whole story was about gods and godesses. I liked parts of this book, but overall I just didn't enjoy reading it very much. Maybe if I liked mythology a little better I might have liked it better, but I don't really care for mythology very much. For those who love mythology, this would be a good book to read. ”

I loved how spoke about the old times and I thought it was wonderful that it was written in a poetic form. You really got a sense of what the old gods where like. You also really got to understand what Gilgamesh went through.
All in all it was a wonderful book and would recommend it to anyone. ”
“Gilgamsh is an epic journy. It is the journey of a 1/3 human and 2/3 god. He is the king of Uruk, and when his best friend/companion dies, he gos on a quest to find immortality. This book is good for people who like mythology or ancient history.
I wouldn't suggest this book in general, but it is a good book. It is a fiction book. It is also kind of an inapproprate book at some points. This book is also good for papers and learning about different cultures. I likes this book mainly because the journey is interesting and keeps your attention most of the time.”
“We read Gilgamesh as a class and at home for English class, and it was difficult to understand but teaches a good lesson. Gilgamesh is a powerful king who is part God, and he has quite the stormy heart. He meets someone Enkidu and they become companions. They adventure together, but Enkidu dies and Gilgamesh realizes that he must die one day too. Read to find out how he seeks immortality!”

It's a short story, following a man who is part god and very strong, and king of the city Uruk, as he gains a companion who starts to veer him away from his selfish desires and power abusive ways. When the companion is taken from him, Gilgamesh is left sad and afraid, because he has seen his equal can be killed. This means he could too. He goes on a quest for immortality so as to never have to worry about dying. He travels through treacherous mountain passes, and water that is death to touch, to find a wise old man named Utnapishtim. Utnapishtim thinks Gilgamesh is unworthy of immortality and sends him on his way back home. Gilgamesh finally realizes that he cannot achieve immortality, and he still has to do what he can in his lifetime to make sure he rules his people well. Because he ruled well after this, he was remembered to this day, so he in a sense gained his immortality...”

All of these are things that Gilgamesh learns about. We guess as to how things will roll out when thing after thing happens to him. We can often recognize something said earlier in the book which we can use to prove how Gilgamesh grows as a person. The things emphasized are the things we should use in our lives.”

Comparing it to a Hero's Journey by Joseph Campbell. I now understand
what a hero's journey is.”
“Gilgamesh has definitely created a few inside jokes between my friends and me. We all love how promiscuous it got at points. the tunnel scene was very entertaining too, but in a different way. The best part, in my opinion, was the ending. It was perfect. I didn't really like the story until the end for some unexplainable reason.
The story was very repeatitive at points, but that was probably just to enhance whatever was being said. The language was also rather simple for the most part. All in all, better than some, but worse than most.”
