First Sentence

We are auditioning in one way or another for most of our lives, first as children crying for mom's attention, later for that perfect after-school job, then for the favors of a lover; we audition for the limited space in the best colleges and for positions on the good rungs in the corporate ladder; we audition for the basketball team, the cheerleading squad, and, if we go into politics, for votes.
