  • Charlie Marlow: Marlow is the main protagonist and first-person narrator. He sails on a steamboat up the Congo river to a remote trading outpost. The journey up the Congo is to find himself; he seeks to find his own reality. As he narrates his tale it's apparent the discomfort that this journey to the heart of darkness causes him.
  • Mistah Kurtz: Legendary chief of the Inner Station, target of Marlow's quest, and the symbol of the darkness residing in every human. Kurtz means short in German. Marlow says of him "I saw on that ivory face the expression of sombre pride, of ruthless power, of craven terror--of an intense and hopeless despair."
  • General Manager: Self-serving, persevering bureaucrat. He is chief of the Central Station.
  • Helmsman: Naive pilot of the steamboat that takes Marlow to Kurtz.
  • Narrator: The narrator whose identity is never stated is listening to Marlow tell his story of finding Kurtz.
  • Kurtz: The 'Agent' par excellence
  • The Russian: The seaman that was the only company of Kurtz in his last months in the station.
  • The Brickmaker: The guy who was supposed to make bricks in the Central Station, however had no real raw materials to start with, so practically did only an administrative, superfluous work there.

    At the beginning of the final section of Part III, Marlow has just recovered from his near-fatal illness.

    During the first section of Part II, Marlow watches the Eldorado Exploring Expedition, a band of freelance bandits, reequip and then depart from the Central Station.

I’ve never seen anything so unreal in my life.     This quote, from the fourth section of Part I, offers Marlow’s initial impression of the Central Station.

  • Central Station: The Company headquarters in the Congo
  • Thames Estuary: The novella opens on a small ship in the Thames Estuary as night falls.
  • Congo Free State: The name by which modern day Congo (Kinshasha), previously called Zaire, was known at the time of the novel. A personal fiefdom of the Belgian king, Leopold II, it was a by word for brutality among the colonial powers although it had been set up to curb the illegal slave trade.
  • Brussels, Belgium): The head office of "the Company" which exploits the resources of the Belgian Free State and employs Marlowe to captain its riverboat.
  • Europe

  • Company: The trading firm for which Kurtz, Marlow, Manager, Brickmaker etc. work, in order to bring valuable goods to Europe, as much as possible, sometimes by dubious means.
