Alex Leslie has changed his name to Will Malfour, decided to become a pirate because he can obtain a ship, and embarks on a voyage to try to find diamonds to buy in Brazil. On his way there, he and his loyal crew capture a ship and its passengers, although Alex isn't as cruel as he'd like to think he is. A few days out on the sea, two of the ten Scots children he'd rescued and found homes in France for were discovered as stowaways aboard the ship, just so they could stay with him. Later, when the captured ship had opened fire upon his ship Met, one of those children, was injured in the arm and it caused quite a lot of problems; she nearly died from the wound. One of the passengers on the captured ship, Jeanette Campbell, was from a hated Scots family, one whom Alex hated with a passion because they'd been instrumental in his losing so many loved ones during the carnage at Culloden. Jenna (she preferred that name) worked to help heal Meg's wound and in the process found that Alex was not the cold, uninterested man he acted and she began to be attracted to him. She was such a different woman than he'd met before, except for his sister, that he admired her eventually, against his will - after all, she was part of "that family". A large visible birthmark on her arm had made her own family treat her badly, out of suspicion, and had made Jenna more of a recluse at home than she was once she found the freedom and pleasure of being on the sea.
Many adventures awaited this group of people, this loyal and nearly ragtag crew - and this woman who defied almost everyone for what she believed in. It was an excellent, rip-roaring story that encompassed several places, and ended in the American colonies.
