This book has in its first few pages one of the most unforgettable scenes I can recall in a novel. And the book builds on that. Among other things, it's an exploration of how war changes and corrupts everything it touches. It's an uncontrollable force, which, once launched, has a fierce and pitiless life of its own.

Yeah I don't know if I can go all the way with you on this one. I honestly had a tough time following what exactly was going on. I kind of felt like a ghost being pushed around the plot witnessing things like a drug-addled scrooge. That may be a dumb metaphor, but I expected alot out of Apocalypse Now by Denis Johnson and was let down. Then again I am a very subjective reader and it may just have been the wrong time to read it. I will surely pick it up sometime down the road.
