I anticipated great things when I picked up Michael Koryta's first novel, "Tonight I Said Goodbye", because the hype it received was unheard of and reminded me of the emergence of the great Dennis Lehane some years back.

Let me begin by saying that this novel lives up to all of the hype and then some! The then 21-year-old Koryta had the added challenge of doing something interesting with the severely over-saturated Private Investigator genre. His P.I.'s - LIncoln Perry and Joe Pritchard, are both former cops and have their practice in their hometown of Cleveland, OH, and they take on the case of aontoher P.I. who is allegedly the victim of a suicide. The victims father knows his son would never take his own life. Even more disturbing is the disappearance of the victims wife and young daughter. The one clue left behind is a diary by the daughter that notes on the date of the alleged suicide: "Tonight I said goodbye."

Perry and Pritchard are well-written characters and top-notch P.I.'s. Their investigation turns up links to the most powerful businessman in Cleveland as well as the Russian mob. When Perry actually stumbles across the wife and daughter by accident, things really heat up and there are surprises at every turn. A terrific debut effort by a new voice in this genre that I definitely will read more from!
