• Leo Demidov: A former KGB agent, he begins this book as a manager of a factory. Because of a frosty relationship with the KGB following his retirement, he is not allowed to go to New York City with his wife and adopted children. After a family crisis and an attempt to escape the Soviet Union, Leo is assigned to Afghanistan to help establish a secret police force for the Afghan government. Throughout the book, Leo is obsessed with getting to New York City to investigate a crime that devastated his family.
• Raisa Demidova: Leo's wife, she begins the book as the principal of a prestigious public school in Moscow. She arranges a school trip to New York City, which is intended as a concert event using a combined Soviet-American choir. After discovering that both the American FBI and Soviet KGB are seeking to use the concert event as a propaganda event, Raisa seeks to protect her two adopted daughters from the potential danger.
• Zoya Demidova: Raisa and Leo's older adopted daughter. More of a rebel than her younger sister Elena, Zoya is more skeptical of the Soviet government. She attends Raisa and Elena on the school trip to New York City.
• Elena Demidova: Raisa and Leo's younger adopted daughter. She is more idealistic and naive than her older sister, and truly loves the Soviet government and the communist system. She attends the school trip to New York City with Raisa and Elena. Her naive and trusting personality gets her drawn into larger events in New York City, with tragic results.
• Jim Yates: An FBI agent, Yates is tasked with rooting out or intimidating communists in America. While he's bullied and intimidated many communists during his career, he's taken a special delight in ruining the career and life or Jesse Austin.
