A fascinating story of a female monarch who twisted Rome around her little finger for decades. Brilliant, and brutal, she manipulated the power of the century to her desires until it all came crashing down. There may have been no asp, but the story is still extraordinary. It's also ironic how 2000 years have changed Egypt. In Cleopatra's day it was a financial powerhouse, with phenomenal wealth. Of course, the wealth was almost entirely concentrated in Alexandria and the queen, which may not be so ironic after all.

Well-researched biography of one of the most powerful woman in the world. Since the facts are quite different than my perception (due to Hollywood), this was an interesting read although the start of the book is a bit dry.

Don't read it for the "juicy gossip" effect, read it because it traces Egyptian, Alexandrian and Greco-Roman societies, cultures and perspectives. Very enlightening when seen with the eyes of a very intelligent, powerful woman such as the Pharoah Cleopatra VII.

It took me months to get through the first half of this but the second half flew by. The story is tragic but it was interesting to learn the different points of view on what might have happened.

As someone who has never given much thought to Cleopatra beyond the typical stereotypes, I found this book fascinating. What emerges from Schiff's prose is a woman much more Hilary Clinton than Elizabeth Taylor, a pragmatic ruler who did what was necessary to keep her country on track during perilous times.

It's a fascinating read, both as history and an engaging story.

A view of what the woman was like, with sound scholarship.

Stopped reading. Too confusing with all the latin/egyptian names. Convoluted sentence structure.

A little heavy on the politics of the time, but an enjoyable and interesting read nonetheless.
