Calliope and Eliot, two fifteen-year-olds in Asheville, North Carolina, begin to acknowledge some unpleasant truths about their parents and form their own ideas about love.

  • Calliope (Cal): One protagonist. She lives with her mom and travels often so that her mom can find work.
  • Eliot: The other protagonist. Lives in Asheville where his parents run a religious camp.
  • Abel: Cal's friend who she mets at the Faire. He is a Jewish man who ran away from his family and has won some awards for his amazing ribs. He really helps Cal out in her times of need and does everything he can to help her be happy.
  • Delores: The mother of Cal. She runs away all of the time because she is afraid that time will catch up with her. She always falls in love with men who aren't good for her to be around. Delores also makes and sells jewelry which she makes out of discarded things, like Cal's bottle cap. Her other job which brings in more money is being a wench in the Faire.
  • Linda: Eliots Mother. She is an amazing carpenter and has an engineering degree.
  • Riggs: One boy who comes to the camp and who Eliot sees constantly praying
