Theodore "Theo" Boone was an only child. Both of his parents were lawyers, so he spent a lot of time in a courthouse and loved to watch cases. He was always giving legal advice to kids in his school. There was a big trial about Pete Duffy murdering his wife. Everyone felt like Mr Duffy was guilty, but they couldn't prove it with the evidence they had. Theo and his class went to the first day of the trial and they sat in the balcony. After that day, one of the boys he helped tutor in math came to him and told him that his cousin thought he had seen the murderer entering and leaving the Duffy's house, but he was too scared to tell anyone. He was an illegal alien and did not speak any English.

Theo promised not to tell anyone about what Julio's cousin, Bobby, saw, so Julio interpreted the story for Bobby. Bobby worked at the Country Club where the Duffy's lived. He was on lunch break in his special spot in the woods eating his sandwich when he saw a man ride up onto the porch in a golf cart. The man got out and put on his golf gloves and went inside the house through the backdoor. The man came out and drove back toward the clubhouse. Later that day, Bobby found some golf gloves in the trashcan at the clubhouse. He took them, but it didn't bother him until he read about the murder. Then he thought the gloves might have belonged to the person that killed Mrs. Duffy

The trial was getting close to ending and it looked like Mr. Duffy was going to be set free. So, Theo had to tell his parents about the information he knew, so they could tell the judge before it was too late. They met with Bobby and Theo and they told him not to worry. If Bobby helped with the case, they would help him get his legal papers so he could stay in the United States with his family. They got to the judge at the very end of the trial and told him about the evidence they had. The judge declared a mistrial, so they would start the trial all over again with new information.
