Suicide Girls is a refreshing return to the 'pin-up' style of erotic art. Herein is presented a 'real' image of female sexuality--one that is at once both demur and larger than life. The models presented here are beautifully imperfect and despite all the tattoos, piercings, and Goth/punk trappings, look more normal than their bland, airbrushed (and blonded) mainstream counterparts. The pictures tell different stories, and whether they are being sensual and erotic, humorous and outrageous, pensive and questioning, all of these models look REAL...and look real good doing it, too!

The return of pin-up aesthetic is welcome and comforting in a time when pornography has taken a huge turn toward the exploitative; the Suicide Girls feature a surprising level of maturity, sexiness, and feministic thought to the world of erotic art; before their coming on to the scene the most respectable nude-photography outlet we had was Playboy, which itself started to flounder in the realm of carbon copy models.

Thankfully, though, Missy Suicide saw enough potential in her DIY sub-culture to take a moment and begin considering classic pin-up-style photography using her friends as models.

When the term alt-porn comes up in terms of history, the Suicide Girls will be a center point of the birth of that scene—though I think Bob Coulter's Crazy Babe site came a bit earlier—not just because of their massive popularity but because of their personal and intimate nature.

That being said, I was a little let down by this book; after being a huge SG fan for so long, the book seemed cut and dry rather than filled with ubiquitous personality. The photos collected here, while stunning both visually and soulfully, seem to be picked at random. They're relegated to portions of pages rather than giving us large, full-page spreads, and they're not organized in any specific order.

At the end of the book, though, are bios of the models who appear. One part interview and one part blog-excerpts, these capture a part of internet history that, really, may very well be a thing of the past even now—the SG website has been revised, the number of models have grown exponentially, and the community of fans and models has sort of broken down. This is both sad and inevitable, of course, but what can we do?

Eventually, when sexuality is no longer taboo amongst common conversation, the Suicide Girls will be remembered (as a whole) as Bettie Page is remembered now (as an individual).
