THEN.
When Sam met Grace, he was a wolf and she was a girl. Eventually, he found a way to become a boy, and their love moved from a curious distance to the intense closeness of shared lives.

NOW.
That should have been the end of their story. But Grace was not meant to stay human.... read more

Characters edit see section history

  • Samuel Roth: Works at a bookstore, Grace's boyfriend, and a supposed ex-werewolf. Has black hair and vibrant yellow eyes, is tall and skinny. Walks with the gait of a wolf. Cole calls him 'Ringo' because of his resemblance to Ringo Starr, a member of the Beatles. Is one of the only ones who can maintain human thoughts when in wolf form. Wholely loves Grace, and worries constantly about the fact that she roams the forest as a wolf. Disliked by Grace's parents, and hit by Grace's father when Grace started showing signs of the change. The primary male character in the book, and now human protector of the pack.
  • Grace Brisbane: The primary character of the series, along with Sam. Grace is Sam's girlfriend, and is now a member of the wolf pack, reversing the roles between Sam and Grace as Sam is now seemingly human. Truly in love with Sam. Ran away from home via the hospital, and has stayed away from Rachel. Formed an oddly solid friendship with Isabel, despite their previous frenemy status in high school. Very compassionate to others, but doesn't respect her parents given their lack of parental presence in her life. She essentially was forced to raise herself since her parents acted like teenagers without any parental responsibilities.
  • Isabel Rosemary Culpeper: Isabel Rosemary Culpeper is not as mean as she seems. She has a thing with Cole St. Clair and she is one of Grace's friends.
  • Cole St. Clair: Werewolf Alpha Beck made Cole into a werewolf when he went to Canada. Former rock star in the band Narkotica. Close friends with Sam and Grace. Has feelings for Isabel. Very intelligent, due in part to his father's scientific tutelage. Lives his life against the grain, and used to getting what he wants much like Isabel. When Beck found him he was on the brink of self destruction/suicide.
  • Geoffrey Beck: Sam's adoptive father and a fierce, well-known lawyer. The head of the werewolf pack when human. His days of turning back into a human are over so he's passed down his role as the human protector to Sam and Cole. Not as honest and compassionate as many believe him to be.
  • Officer William Koenig: A policeman who questioned Sam about Olivia's and Grace's disappearance. He seems to be a compassionate and just man.
  • Rachel Coun: One of grace's best friends in high school who's described as quirky.
  • Shelby: The vindictive white wolf. Shelby lived with Sam and the others at Beck's house when they were younger and all in human form. She is the outcast of the pack and as Cole calls her, the "bitchy" wolf. She has tried to kill Grace multiple times. Was horribly, physically abused when Beck found her. She wanted to rule the pack at Sam's side until Grace moved in on her territory. Very aggressive and full of rage and jealousy.
  • Jack Culpeper: Isabel's brother. Died from the meningitis "cure" while in human form. His death spawned his father's campaign to get rid of the wolves of Mercy Falls.
  • Olivia: Grace's best friend who is now a white wolf and was bitten by Jack before he died of the 'cure'. Former photographer.
  • Ulrik: Part of the werewolf pack and peacemaker. Used to be very close to Sam before he changed permanently. Often offered bits of wisdom from his old homeland to Sam.
  • Thomas Culpeper: Isabel's father. He's trying to kill the pack since they killed Jack, because it's the only thing he feels he can now control, since he couldn't help his son. Very involved in political matters and has a stern, stubborn, proud, distant, standoffish air to him in regards to the relationship with his daughter, Isabel.
  • Karyn: The owner of "The Crooked Shelf". The bookstore Sam works at. Lenient, strong, and caring. She is protective of Sam.
  • Victor: Cole's late best friend and former band mate, killed by Tom Culpeper when he was a wolf. "Saved" by Beck, the Alpha of the pack. Cole's ex-girlfriend's brother.
  • Amy Brisbane: Grace's mom, an artist.
  • Jeremy: Cole's old NARKOTIKA band mate and reliable friend.
  • Lewis Brisbane: Add a description of this character.
  • Dr. Culpepper: Isabel's mother. She always want to help rescue someone.
  • Detective Heifort: One of the detectives trying to find out what happened to Grace.

Quotes edit see section history

  • “That was how Cole found me, an hour later. Sitting cross-legged in the empty bathtub, my guitar in my lap, my fingers teasing out a G major chord, singing a song I'd never sung before.”
    Sam
  • “When we kissed, it didn't matter that I had been a wolf hours ago, or that I would be a wolf again. It didn't matter that a thousand snares were laid for us as soon as we left this moment. All that mattered was this: our noses were touching, the softness of his mouth, the ache inside me.”
    Grace
  • ““The thing I was beginning to figure out about Sam and Grace, the thing about Sam not being able to function without her, was that that sort of love only worked when you were sure both people would always be around for each other. If one half of the equation left, or died, or was slightly less perfect in their love, it became the most tragic, pathetic story invented, laughable in its absurdity. Without Grace, Sam was a joke without a punch line.””
    Cole St. Clair
  • ““It’s not the way I was brought up,” he said finally. “People shouldn’t have to earn kindness. They should have to earn cruelty.””
    Sam
  • ““Are you high? Why are you never wearing a shirt?” "I sleep naked," Cole said. He put both milk and sugar in my coffee. “As the day goes on, I put more and more clothing. You should’ve come over an hour ago.””
    Isabel & Cole
  • ““We all listen to you, Sam.” He jumped to the pavement. “You just don’t always talk us.””
    Cole St. Clair
  • “Sam Roth, werewolf by night, book retail specialist by day. Don't you need a cape for that?”
    Cole
  • “Taking risks is not being suicidal. Otherwise, skydivers need serious help.”
    Cole
  • “Do that again, and I will sell your firstborn child to the devil.”
    Isabel
  • “Are there any other missing person living under your roof? Elvis? Jimmy Hoffa? Amelia Earhart? I'd just like to have full disclosure now, before we go any further.”
    Officer Koenig
  • “I may have misjudged doggie tranquilizer dosages. Not everything you read online is true. Apparently wolves require more than neurotic German Shepherds.”
    Cole
  • “Here are our options." "We have more than one?" "Three, precisely. That one makes you a wolf. That one makes me a wolf. That one gives up both seizures.”
    Cole, Sam
  • “Now Ringo and I have even more in common. Your father's shot both of us. How many people can say that?”
    Cole
  • “And always, as they ran, though there was an urgency to the pack, Sam and Grace were touching, nosing, bumping against each other. Everything they had as humans translated.”
    Cole
  • “I grabbed on to her throat. There was no joy in this revenge. She twisted, but I hung on, because I had to”
    Cole
  • “"I can't tell the difference between not fighting," I said, "and giving up."”
    Isabel
  • “For all that I loved being a wolf, I loved being Grace more.”
    Grace
  • “People don't change who they are. They only change what they do with it.”
    Tom Culpeper
  • “Then we marched to the front door, sisters in battle, the sound of our shoes on the concrete sidewalk our only battle cry.”
    Grace
  • “She was like a beautiful and lonely piece of art, lovely but unreachable.”
  • ““Nobody ever sees this part,” I said. “It doesn’t matter if it’s pretty.”
  • “....some people see what they want to see.”
  • ““You’re an addiction,” I told him. “You should know.””
  • “Mutual, respectful, enduring love is completely attainable as long as you swear you won’t settle for less.”
  • “"So who does most of the songwriting?" jan had asked. "Or is it a group thing?""Oh, it's a group thing," Jeremy said in his slow easy way. He'd picked up a Southern accent at the same time he'd acquired Buddhism. "Cole writes the lyrics, and then I bring him coffee, and then Cole writes the music, and Victor brings him pretzels."”
    Jan & Jeremy
  • “I have maybe ten minuetes to raise my son who I didnt think would make it past eighteen”
    Beck
  • “Getting into the Volkswagen in the dark driveway, the car rumbling to life, it felt like we were conspiring to be something greater than just chasing lights in the sky. We could be going anywhere. Chasing the promise of magic.”
    Grace
  • “I didn't understand how someone could be both God and the devil. How the same person could destroy you and save you. When everything I was, good and bad, was knotted with threads of his making, how was I supposed to know whether to love or hate him?”
    Sam

Setting & Locations edit see section history

Mercy Falls, Minnesota, the epi-center of the Shiver Trilogy, is the third character. The weather and personality of the place is just as important to the Shiver as Sam and Grace's love. Mercy Falls is an imaginary town (well, it's as real as Sam and Grace). In my head, it is located at the edge of the Boundary Waters, near the real town of Ely, Minnesota. Just south of the Canadian border, Mercy Falls, like Ely, is cold—with an average high temperature that never breaks 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
